Moving with Pets

Pets    So you're moving.  You have a million and one things to keep tabs on.  You're trying to make your move as smooth as possible. Things seem to be going very well.   Sure, you've been a little edgy and perhaps nervous, but it's nothing you can't handle.

Then you notice, your dog has started chewing on your shoes for the first time since he was a puppy.  Your cat has suddenly forgotten were the litter box is.  And, your ferret has for the first time since you can remember, not wanted to play.  Welcome to the pet zone.

Pets are sensitive to your moods and know when something is happening in your life.  So, do yourself and them a favor, keep them as happy as possible. If there is any information that I have missed or you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Here are some tips to help you move with your pet.
  • Spend "quality" time with your pet.  Let them know that they are still on your mind.
  • Go to the vet and have a check-up done before the move.
  • Get copies of their vaccination records etcetera from the Vet.
  • Ask the Vet if they have any Veterinary facilities that they can recommend you to. (Many Vets have colleagues all over the country that they can refer you to.)
  • Talk to the Vet about the move and how you plan to move your pet. (They may prescribe something to calm your animal either during a long flight or drive.)
  • Purchase a carrier for your pet. (If flying with your pet, check the guidelines for the kind of carriers you can use.  If you want to take the pet with you on the actual plane, you will have to check those guidelines and see if you can book it.  Airlines usually have very limited space available for pets on-board the actual passenger areas.)
  • Watch their diet and make sure they are eating properly
  • When in your new home, let your pet explore their new home a little at a time until they feel comfortable with it. (Ferret owners, don't forget to "Ferret proof" your home.)
  • Make sure their tag is current with your new phone number.
  • Check with the local area regarding regulations regarding pet licenses and vaccinations. (Ferret owners, since ferrets are still illegal in a few states and areas, be sure to find out before moving. They are legal in Colorado.)
