A Brief look at the Tri-Lakes Area (TRI)
(Woodmoor, Palmer Lake,  Monument & Surrounding Area)

The Tri-Lakes area lies on both the east and west side of the Interstate and consists of the small towns of Monument and Palmer Lake, and the community of Woodmoor and their namesake lakes.

The natural beauty of sandstone rock formations set against the mountains is breathtaking. Many of the north end residents find the commute to Denver acceptable. From the northwestern corner of El Paso County bordering the Pike National Forest on the west, Douglas County to the north, Baptist Road and the Air Force Academy to the South, and Colorado Highway 83 to the east. Some notable characteristics are that the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains runs north-south through this region as does I-25, is a major artery to Denver in the North and Albuquerque to the south. Distinctive landmarks are Palmer Lake, Elephant Rock, and the Santa Fe Regional Trail.

The Tri-Lakes weather tends to be slightly more severe as a result of the higher elevation (7000') and the geographic feature known as the Palmer Divide.

The neighborhoods and communities are characterized by more rural living with larger tracts of land with many rustic homes and horse properties. Some areas are heavily treed, some have a mixture of trees and meadows, and some offer rolling hills. The area has a mixture of older homes that were built in the late 70's and new ones currently under construction. This area also offers spectacular mountain views as well as rugged mountain living with views of the plains, with increased privacy and seclusion, but without the long commutes to the larger metropolitan areas of Colorado Springs or Denver.

Palmer Lake was the settled in the 1860’s. The setters found themselves frequently under the attacks of the Cheyenne and Arapahoe Indians. A stone fort was built as a form of protection from these raids.

Woodmoor is fast becoming a choice for many newcomers. Because of its’ popularity, a committee has been formed to decide if incorporating and becoming a city would be beneficial. The cost of property taxes would have to increase to defray the costs of their own police force and schooling. For many residents of this upscale community the idea is a negative one as many people strive to keep its’ rural stature.

The Tri-Lakes area is mainly agricultural and was once recognized for its’ great potato harvests shipping up to 400 rail cars a year during the 1880-1890 period. The residents would celebrate "Potato Bake Day" after the harvest.

Once a small agricultural community and popular retirement site, the community is now a growing thriving area that is fast drawing new residents. With plenty of outdoor activities and private golf courses, the area abounds with energy and activity.
