Manitou Springs (MAN)
Manitou Springs is a delightful Victorian town nestled in a canyon visited by thousands every year. This tourist town has many attractions like the Cliff Dwellings, Cave of the Winds, Cog Railway, Miramont Castle and of course the Mineral Springs themselves. Manitou Springs is also thought of as a Westside neighborhood and the gateway to Garden of the Gods and Ute pass. Manitou Springs, it is a separate town of about 5,500 residents. Many homes styles, from Victorian to modern; and cottages and cabins line Manitou's hilly, winding streets. This area lies on both sides of Highway 24, and features lots of little shops, unique restaurants, and of course, all the beauty the Pikes Peak Region has to offer. Lying within the Manitou Springs city limits is Crystal Hills which overlooks the town. The 900-acre Cedar Heights exclusive, gated community is perched on a mountainside above Manitou Springs and Garden of the Gods. Home sites range from one to five acres with custom homes, truly one of the area's most spectacular places to live. Manitou Springs has a uniquely quaint feeling, and is a very popular place to live. Manitou Springs is a separate town with its own government. It is one of the country’s largest national Historic Districts. The Legend has is that the Utes named the springs Manitou, which means in Algonquin means "Great Spirit." It was believed that the Great Spirit had breathed into the waters to create the natural effervescence of the springs. Pikes Peak soars above the town nestled at its base. It is said that Manitou is responsible for breathing into the waters and creating the natural effervescence of the springs and giving them great curative powers. General Palmer and an English physician, Dr. William Bell visited the springs area in 1868 and fell in love with it. They envisioned a health spa within the soda springs, a vision that led to the development of Manitou Springs which began on July 31, 1871. Health seekers from around the world came to breathe in the fresh mountain air and sip the healing mineral waters. The town flowered with Victorian homes, hotels, redstone castles and a thriving business district. Sitting at the base of Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs is still one of the biggest tourist attractions. With 26 mineral springs in the city, nine of which have been restored and are now open to the public to drink, Manitou Springs is listed as a National Historic District.
