Cripple Creek & Victor

In 1890 gold fever put Cripple Creek on the map. The district's mines are responsible for making the area the fourth largest gold producing camp in the world.

By 1893, miners had dug up $3 million in gold ore; by 1899 a total of about $59 million in ore was sent out of the camp. Area mines produced $432 million by the end of the gold rush.

Wooden storefronts lined the dusty streets and  cities consisting of tents were built around them. Due to two fires in 1896, the town burned to the ground and brick buildings quickly replaced the old wooden buildings. Most of these brick buildings (now refurbished) play home to casinos filled with visitors trying their luck on the slots.

Today gold mining still has an incredible influence on the area. Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co., a subsidiary of MINORCO, operates the largest open pit and heap leach gold mine in the state of Colorado. The operation is located between Cripple Creek and Victor.

Victor resident Jim Watson owns the district’s only working underground gold mine. The mine is located just above Victor. The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine offers underground tours and aboveground modern-day mine tours.

Cripple Creek and Victor are a part of Teller County.
